Environmental Restoration & Tree Plantation Projects

Practical experience in environmental restoration, climate resilience, landscape enhancement, biodiversity conservation, and community-led sustainable development across Somaliland and the wider East African region.

Delivered Projects

The following projects demonstrate the practical experience and commitment of Real Hub Initiatives in environmental restoration, climate resilience, landscape enhancement, biodiversity conservation, and community-led sustainable development across Somaliland and the wider East African region.

PROJECT 01

Amoud Valley Tree Plantation Project

Amoud Valley Tree Plantation Project for Soil Erosion Prevention and Climate Change Resilience

Location: Amoud Valley, Awdal Region, Somaliland
Project Goal

To mitigate soil erosion, rehabilitate degraded landscapes, improve ecosystem stability, and strengthen climate resilience through strategic tree planting and community-based environmental stewardship.

Project Background

Amoud Valley is one of the most significant ecological and agricultural zones in the Awdal Region. Over time, environmental pressures including deforestation, unsustainable land use practices, recurrent droughts, and seasonal flooding have accelerated soil erosion and land degradation.

Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, Real Hub Initiatives designed and implemented a comprehensive tree plantation and environmental restoration program aimed at protecting the valley's ecosystem while enhancing long-term resilience against climate change impacts.

Key Activities Implemented

  • Environmental baseline assessment and site identification.
  • Community mobilization and environmental awareness campaigns.
  • Selection of drought-resistant indigenous tree species.
  • Establishment of tree nurseries and seedling production systems.
  • Plantation of trees along vulnerable erosion-prone zones.
  • Construction of basic soil and water conservation structures.
  • Community training on tree management and environmental protection.
  • Development of local stewardship committees for long-term sustainability.

Results and Achievements

  • Significant stabilization of erosion-prone areas.
  • Enhanced vegetation cover within targeted sections of the valley.
  • Improved soil moisture retention capacity.
  • Increased community awareness regarding environmental conservation.
  • Strengthened climate adaptation measures for local communities.
  • Established a replicable model for ecosystem restoration initiatives across Somaliland.
Impact

The project contributed to safeguarding agricultural lands, preserving biodiversity, improving water infiltration, and creating a foundation for long-term climate resilience in the Amoud Valley ecosystem.

PROJECT 02

Borama District Headquarters Tree Plantation Project

Borama District Headquarters Landscape Enhancement and Urban Greening Project

Location: Borama District Headquarters, Awdal Region, Somaliland
Project Goal

To improve the aesthetic appearance, environmental quality, and public image of Borama District Headquarters through urban greening and landscape enhancement initiatives.

Project Background

Urban centers across East Africa increasingly face environmental challenges associated with rapid population growth and inadequate green infrastructure. Public institutions require ecologically sustainable landscapes that create healthy, attractive, and productive working environments.

To support environmental sustainability and beautification objectives, Real Hub Initiatives partnered with local stakeholders to undertake a major tree plantation project within and around the Borama District Headquarters compound.

Key Activities Implemented

  • Landscape planning and site design.
  • Selection of ornamental and shade tree species.
  • Site preparation and soil improvement works.
  • Planting of decorative and environmentally beneficial tree varieties.
  • Installation of watering and maintenance schedules.
  • Environmental awareness sessions with district personnel and community representatives.
  • Development of a long-term maintenance framework.

Results and Achievements

  • Enhanced visual appeal of the district headquarters.
  • Increased shade and improved microclimate conditions.
  • Improved environmental quality within the compound.
  • Promotion of sustainable urban landscaping practices.
  • Creation of a model green public institution in the region.
Impact

The project transformed public spaces into more attractive, environmentally sustainable areas while demonstrating the importance of integrating green infrastructure into government institutions and urban planning initiatives.

PROJECT 03

National Environment Day Tree Plantation Project – Hargeisa

National Environment Day Tree Plantation Campaign for Combating Desertification and Deforestation

Location: Hargeisa, Maroodi Jeex Region, Somaliland
Project Goal

To contribute to national and global efforts aimed at combating desertification, reversing deforestation trends, and promoting environmental sustainability through large-scale tree planting and public awareness campaigns.

Project Background

Environmental degradation remains one of the most pressing challenges facing Somaliland and the Horn of Africa. Deforestation, desert encroachment, land degradation, and climate variability continue to threaten livelihoods, biodiversity, and economic development.

In commemoration of International Environment Day, Real Hub Initiatives organized and led a strategic environmental campaign focused on mobilizing communities, institutions, and youth groups around tree planting and environmental protection.

Key Activities Implemented

  • National Environment Day awareness campaign.
  • Multi-stakeholder engagement involving government, educational institutions, and civil society.
  • Community-based tree planting events across selected sites.
  • Environmental education and advocacy sessions.
  • Distribution of indigenous drought-resistant seedlings.
  • Media outreach and environmental awareness promotion.
  • Establishment of volunteer environmental protection networks.

Results and Achievements

  • Increased public awareness regarding environmental conservation.
  • Improved community participation in climate action initiatives.
  • Expansion of urban green spaces.
  • Enhanced protection against desertification and land degradation.
  • Strengthened collaboration among environmental stakeholders.
Impact

The initiative promoted environmental responsibility, fostered a culture of sustainability, and contributed to national efforts aimed at restoring degraded lands while addressing the underlying drivers of deforestation and desertification.
